The training provided is in a structured format and given by University trained instructors and experienced facilitators. At the Centre we try to cater for all the community's requirements, so if the course you want to do is not here, contact the friendly reception staff 83863319 and place a Registration Of Interest. Once we have enough registrations we aim to run the course.

Computers for Beginners
Have fun while learning the very basics of the Windows operating system. This course covers the basic fundamentals to operate Windows XP including opening and working within a window, opening programmes, directory structures, working through the Start menu, creating directories and working with files. It also includes various aspects of the Control Panel, Accessories and Maintenance software.
Computers for Beginners Stage 2
This course is an optional course designed for beginners who want to explore their computer in more depth. Have your questions answered and your knowledge reinforced as you are guided through practical tasks that sharpen and strengthen your computing skills!
Stage 1 Word
This course covers everything you need to get started with MS Word; opening, saving and creating new files, basic font and paragraph formatting, insertion of WordArt and ClipArt, word wrapping, spell check, editing and many handy shortcuts. This course is ideal for the word processing beginner and great for those who are self-taught and feel they have missed some basics of the programme.
Stage 2 Word
During this course you will extend your Word Processing skills. You are introduced to creation of tables, creation of a newsletter including headers and footers, drop caps, columns, styles and their formatting, multiple document manipulation. Other topics are mail merging and the use of text boxes and the drawing toolbar to create you own promotional flier or invitation.
Stage 3 Word
This exciting course is designed for those who have experience with MS Word and want to know more and for students who are looking or are in office-type employment. Subjects included in this course are: Personalising Word XP, Creating graphs in MS Word, creation and use of templates, use and settings of tabs and leaders, customising your toolbars, AutoText and AutoCorrection, creation of letterheads including importing photographs.
Introduction to MS Excel
Introduction to Microsoft Excel spreadsheets gives an introductory tour of the Excel software, useful in accounting for the home or small business. Subjects include: how to insert information, formatting of cells, basic formulae, multi-function formulae and creating a multi-page workbook.
PowerPoint Stage 1
This presentation software allows you to prepare stunning effects for slide show presentations. Whether you want to make a presentation for a job or work experience, present a project at school or your local club, or just make slideshows for your family and friends, this course will teach you the skills needed to create professional-looking presentations.
PowerPoint Stage 2
Following on from PowerPoint Stage 1, this course will reinforce what you have previously learned and will go on to cover more advanced techniques such as adding animations and sound to your presentations. You will be introduced to charts and tables, design templates, as well as modifying slide transitions and animation schemes. Packing your presentation to a CD, so that it can be played on computers that don’t have the PowerPoint program, will also be covered.
Introduction to Publisher
Newsletters, flyers, cards and pictures. Publisher is a great desktop publishing program and this course will teach you the essentials needed to create newsletters, brochures, greeting cards and other publications. Learn how to ‘layer’ your objects and manipulate your pictures and clipart so that your finished item has that professional look. You will come away from this course knowing all you need to create your own specialised publications.
Publisher Stage 2
This course follows on from Publisher Stage 1 and is for those that want to take what they have learned and put it into practice while also getting a more in-depth knowledge of this versatile software package. Several practical tasks will be completed, giving the student a much stronger ability to produce a variety of publications.
Introduction to Internet and Email
This 8-hour course will uncover the mystery about both the Internet and Email using simple layman's terms and hands on experience. During this course you will learn about Internet browsers, ISP's, search engines, e-mails and sending attachments. If this sounds like jargon to you and you want to understand it, this course is designed for you. A basic knowledge of computers is the only prerequisite.
Advanced Internet
The next step, after getting the basics you can now look at webcams, chat rooms and much more. This exciting course follows on from the introductory course and covers utilising the Internet in a lot more depth. Learn how to send photos, pictures and other files and how to manage your emails more effectively. Start talking to your friends and relatives throughout the world ‘face to face’ by using webcams and speakers! Better use of search engines will be covered so that you can get anywhere on the web easily and efficiently. Learn how to use the new VOiP technology and how it can significantly reduce your phone costs!
Web Page Creation
Learn how to create your own web page!
Whether you want to have a web page that tells about yourself or one to use in small business, this is the course to undertake. You will be taught on how to make great looking pages with formatted text, sharp images, backgrounds, hypertext links, tables and buttons, and lines. Uploading your pages to an Internet server is the next step and those already connected to the Internet may already have this service available to them! Come and be guided through the steps of getting your web page up and running.
Keyboard Skills
This is a great place to start if you are unsure of how to get around your computer keyboard effectively. Learn where all the keys are and what they do. Sound keyboard skills enable you to get the most out of your computer and this course will give you a strong foundation to build upon. We will also go through the Microsoft keyboard and explain the short cut keys as well as learning the basics of touch typing.
Touch Typing
This course continues on from the Keyboard Skills course and will help you improve your touch typing skills. Learn the techniques to become proficient at touch typing. Whether you need typing skills for employment or for personal development, you will increase in speed and accuracy by attending these classes. The more you practice, the better you will get!
Digital Cameras
This exciting course will introduce you to the world of digital cameras and how to utilise them more effectively. If you have a digital camera, please bring it along. Apart from covering what features are available in cameras these days, you will learn about compression, resolution, editing your pics and you will also be introduced to some great photo manipulation techniques such as cropping, layering, brightness and contrast. Enhancing the look of your photos by retouching and using other effects will be explained as well. You will also learn how to transfer your photo files to your computer and we will cover the steps of putting your pictures on to a CD Rom or DVD!
Photo Editing
How would you like to get taught the techniques of editing and making your digital photos look the way you would like them to? This course is a practical one where you will get hands-on experience in changing the format of your photos. Learn how to ‘airbrush’ your way around your pics so that you can finally get that perfect photograph! Utilising computer software, you can make your photos appear to be quite different from the way they originally were. Graphics tablets will also be covered.

Video Editing Stage 1
Learn how to edit your home videos so that they look as though a professional has made them. This course shows you how you can use readily available computer software to enhance the look of your home movies. Use digital video transitions and effects as well as movie titles and credits to make your videos become much more than just a recorded piece of film. We will cover areas such as capturing footage from a video device to your computer, and also importing pictures and audio into the program. Firewire will be explained and you should come away with a good grounding to get you started in the whole new world of video editing.

There are a maximum of 6 people per class, so please book and pay early to avoid disappointment. We are currently changing our procedures for booking into the computer courses. Please come in and pay or ring to arrange payments for the above courses. We are not taking 'Registration of Interest'. If there are insufficient numbers SMNC Inc reserves the right to change or cancel classes. A course will be rescheduled and payment can be reimbursed or forwarded to the next course time.
